Melbourne University
a class act in world ranks

In the recently released university rankings by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Melbourne University has emerged as the NUMBER 1 in Australia and NUMBER 60 globally.

This ranking has reaffirmed Melbourne University's status as Australia's TOP university after the Times Higher Education 2010 rankings also placed Melbourne University as No. 1 in Australia (36th globally). WELL DONE!

Having experience Melbourne University first hand, I can testify that I have really enjoyed my time at Melbourne University. Lush grounds, first class facilities, brilliant/engaging academics, vibrant school culture and excellent teaching environment are just some of the reasons why Melbourne University is a top, top university in my humble opinion.

However, I am never a fan of rankings as I believe that in all rankings, there is always some subjectivity involved. For this rankings, universities are graded on their research output primarily. Hence, it is no indication of the university's teaching and learning quality. It is thus imperative that Melbourne University maintain its high teaching/learning quality in order to continue attracting the best minds across the globe.

Having said that, this rankings is also a shot in the arm for the university's bold plan to undertake undergraduate degree reform back in 2008 aka the much maligned Melbourne Model. It was a risk but a calculated one and now it's reaping dividends I guess. Other universities such as the University of Western Australia (UWA) are also following Melbourne's lead to move towards a 3 year undergraduate degree followed by 2-3 years of postgraduate studies.

As the Melbourne Model is still in its infancy, only time will tell if it will be truly successful. There is cause for optimism nonetheless as recent signs bode well for the future.
