Another El-Classico (FC Barcelona VS Real Madrid CF), another scuffle, another unsavoury ending to a game that has brought scintillating football to our screens across the world.
Football aside, this Spanish Super Cup match has once again been embroiled in controversy following the sending off of Real Madrid's Marcelo for a tackle on Barcelona's Fabregas. The red card was fully warranted but the melee that followed was uncalled for. I understand that Real Madrid has been frustrated by the antics of Barcelona's players since last season but why can't we let the football talk on the pitch? Honestly, I was unimpressed by Barcelona's playacting last season but this tackle was truly a red card.
There are many positives from the game especially Messi's winner and yet instead of talking about the great match, we're talking about the post-match scuffle. In my opinion, Real Madrid has to instill some form of discipline in its players otherwise the team can never fulfill their talent and become a championship winning side. Having said that, Real's manager Jose Mourinho is certainly not setting a good example for his players. He may be a great manager but in terms of professionalism, I have my doubts.
The fallout from this saga may see Jose Mourinho being given a touchline ban once again but does that solve the crux of the issue? Mourinho needs to know that such discipline problems plaguing his career does no favours for his reputation in the eyes of the Spanish Football Association.
I have a feeling that Real Madrid's board is getting disillusioned by Mourinho's off the pitch actions and are just holding on to him as he seems the most likely candidate to bring Real trophies. I do hope Mourinho does wise up as only then will his players follow suit. If he continues to bring the game into disrepute, Mourinho may well face the sack soon enough.
