Was introduced to visual culture today during Media & Communications Research lecture. Interesting thesis put forth by W.J.T. Mitchell as he deconstructs the differences between art and non-art that visual culture brings to the fore.
What caught my attention was the ability to relate to some of his points. One of them is that all media are mixed media and never a stand alone. This is true because in every image, film or media text that we encounter in our daily lives, we cannot interpreting them solely using 1 sense. An advertisement can only be construed with the semiotic analysis plus a knowledge of language.
Another thing that is worthy of attention is the fact that visual culture does not only include the study of images but also involves the element of everyday life. To put into context, we associate many images back to our personal experience and such a relationship varies from people to people.
Am still pretty messed up about visual culture but I think I've got the general idea. Hope to clear up some issues during tutes later this week.
