“Bubble & Squeak!
- Galleon, St. Kilda -
What a weekend! Azure blue skies, resplendent sunshine and the hustle and bustle of the crowd. Yes, this weekend is the St. Kilda's Festival with a kite-surfing/kiteboarding cum beach rugby competition going on. Add that on to the bayside run supported by The Sunday Age and a whole host of other sponsors.
St. Kilda, a bayside suburb which I've visited so many times since I arrived in Melbourne. From Luna Park to the Palais Theatre, it is starting to bore you isn't it? Well not exactly. In fact, St. Kilda has so much more to offer. This time around, I went there with a long-time friend from Monash to check out the road less travelled. (PS: Majority of Melbourne Uni students ain't done yet with exams except me...hahaha!)
We went to the other side of St. Kilda - St. Kilda West Beach where the competitions were held. Scintillating sight as the majestic kites float high up in the air with surfers waveboarding. Add that with the throngs of participants in the beach rugby strutting their stuff and everything is almost complete.
To our surprise, there's indeed many quaint little side streets plus the many, many more restaurants on offer. One restaurant that caught my attention was 29th Apartment on Fitzroy Street. This restaurant as the name suggests is decorated in the form of a home. Trust me, it really felt like one's apartment with all the features available in the dining area from the refrigerator to the gigantic television. What a cosy place to hang out.
Acland Street, one of Melbourne's famous food precincts never disappoint. Rows and rows of cake shops displaying their sweet treats. Certainly enough to leave one salivating to the max. Of course, that's too early in the day for cakes and sweet treats so we headed off to the Galleon Cafe on Carlisle Street. Their famous dishes were sweet potato, basil and feta hash served with wilted spinach and a poached egg.
BUT me being the adventurous kind, chose the Galleon style "Bubble and Squeak". Yes, that's the name. Don't ask me why but it tasted really great with the basil, potato mash on top of two toasted slices of sourdough bread and grilled tomatoes to cap it all off. I also tried a short macchiato instead of my usual cafe latte and honestly, it was too bitter for my liking..hahaha! That's the price for being adventurous I suppose.
