“We Remember... 10 years on

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Time flies and I could vividly remember myself still in secondary school watching the events unfold on my TV screen...totally lost as to what was going on.
There was much debate in Australia recently about this following question:
Should we mark 9/11 with a minute of silence in Australia?
Here's my 2 cents worth of ideas. Firstly, having a minute of silence in Australia represents a form of solidarity with its closest ally in the USA. However, there isn't much significance for Australians to commemorate as the event did not have as huge an impact on Australia unlike the Bali bombings. Am not gauging the impact based on Australian casualties but simply saying about the proximity of the attacks from Australia. The Bali bombings are closer to home and thus the climate of fear / remembrance pervades more than the 9/11 attacks.
So how can we fault event organisers for not pushing a minute of silence in Australia? If Australians have to mark 9/11 with a minute of silence in Australia, then shouldn't the Americans mark the Bali bombings with a minute of silence in USA? It begs the question isn't it? My point of view is that a minute of silence is a bonus but certainly not a must.
Btw, the memorial for the 9/11 attacks was really a piece of art and worthy of its status as a place to reflect/remember. Based on the footprints of the original twin towers, the man-made waterfall is really majestic. Enjoy the following:
